Regardless of what one might think of actor and filmmaker Giuseppe Andrews’ low-fi experimental comedic oddities or his prowess as a serious artist, there’s no denying that the art he’s making is incredibly honest and deeply humane and empathetic.

Director Adam Rifkin (who met Giuseppe while making Detroit Rock City) follows Andrews around as he attempts to make a Fassbinder inspired film in less than two days with his troupe of actors that include residents of his Ventura, CA trailer park, homeless people, and a stripper who just lost her job. They all work with Andrews because the bizarre, filthy minded flicks he makes actually mean something to everyone.

A hilarious and disarmingly kind hearted look at a thoughtfully silly iconoclast who came from nothing and continues to do his own thing, the film portrays Andrews’ sometimes deranged visions as unpretentious larks designed to make the players and the filmmaker feel good about themselves without ever worrying what outsiders would think of it. It’s inspiring even for those who would never watch or remotely understand any of Giuseppe’s films.
