The Continent
From blogger, novelist, and race car driver Han Han, The Continent is a socially interesting, but narratively slight affair about three small town friends hitting the road to find themselves.
With a desire to get out and find his long time pen pal, Ma Hoahan decides to leave his small island community with his two friends. It doesn’t take long on their journey for one of them to fall in love with a local call girl, and Ma ends up learning more about his old crush than he could have ever expected.
While filled with classic imagery and ideals, The Continent masquerades at being deep and meaningful, but only resonates with one specifically younger audience. Obviously geared to a younger generation, the first time director puts together a nice package, but it never feels particularly revelatory or original. For those a little more media and pop culture savvy, the material feels recycled from the teen movie playbook.
If you’ve never seen a movie before, The Continent resonates well enough, but the experienced cinephile or teen movie buff knows everything that’s going to happen before the characters in the film know. (Dave Voigt)
