First Star Trek: Beyond Trailer gets Fast and Furious

We can now add Star Trek to the list of things piggybacking on the return of Star Wars. The first trailer for Star Trek: Beyond has hit the web in the build-up to The Force Awakens, and while J.J. Abrams is no longer in the Star Trek director’s chair (I hear he got another gig), replacement Justin Lin – best known for shaping the modern incarnation of The Fast and the Furious – has already put his stamp on the franchise.

While it’s a little jarring to hear the Beastie Boy’s ‘Sabotage’ blasting over a Star Trek trailer if only because it’s so deliberately anachronistic, I otherwise enjoyed everything about this trailer. Star Trek: Beyond looks and feels like a Fast and the Furious movie, which is to say that Star Trek: Beyond looks like a lot of fun and Justin Lin could prove to be an inspired choice for director, especially since he has plenty of experience juggling diverse ensemble casts while making sure that every character gets a showcase. I don’t know Star Trek well enough to say how true it is to the source material, but that didn’t seem to be much of a priority for the last two Star Trek films so I don’t know why it would be an issue here.

I guess what I’m saying is that if you’re going turn Star Trek into a generic action movie, it’s better to make it a good action movie than it is to make drivel like Star Trek: Into Darkness. If nothing else, Star Trek: Beyond once again confirms that people will still be listening to the Beastie Boys in 300 years, and I think we can all agree that that’s a future we’d like to live in.

Star Trek: Beyond reunites the Enterprise crew with Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Karl Urban, and Simon Pegg. It’s slated to hit theatres on July 22.
