TIFF 2016: HAND.LINE.COD. Review

Short Cuts

Having grown up in the long shadow of the fishery collapse in Newfoundland, there’s something surreal about seeing Fogo Island fishers catching cod by hand in Justin Simms’ short documentary HAND.LINE.COD. I found myself having a visceral, almost emotional reaction to seeing the intricate methods used to slowly catch one fish at a time, with the hand-lined cod being sent to fine dining establishments throughout Toronto. A world away from the industrial practices that drained the province of its livelihood, the film demonstrates how some brave, passionate people have maintained their relationship with the water. Just bring a Newfoundlander with you to translate some of the accents.
