Okja

Netflix’s Okja Pits Little Girl, Monster Friend, Against Multinational Corporate Villain Tilda Swinton

Today Netflix released a teaser for its next big deal feature film, Okja. Directed by Bong Joon Ho, the auteur behind genre-bending dystopian cult hit Snowpiercer, Okja is a star-studded creature feature about a young girl named Mija as she attempts to protect her titular best friend from being abducted by a multinational company. But there’s a twist. Mija’s best friend is a giant but gentle monster who seems to have been created in a lab by an enthusiastic Tilda Swinton.

From the short glimpse offered by the teaser — which prominently features dialogue from Swinton and a swelling emotional score before revealing the big, sad eye of a misunderstood creature — it’s safe to say Okja isn’t going to be a hyper-violent spiritual successor to Snowpiercer. But it does look unique, full of sci-fi style, and built specifically to test the bounds of human-to-monster empathy. It also has a ridiculous cast, which includes Swinton, Paul Dano, Lily Collins, Jake Gyllenhaal, Steven Yeun, Giancarlo Esposito, and Woo-sik Choi.

For those of you easily invested in adorable abominations being protected by human companions, Okja will be released on Netflix June 28. Mark your calendar.
