Final Fantasy 15 Updates and News on the FF7 Remake

There’s been a lot of hype around Final Fantasy recently, with new fans taking to the PS4 to play the latest edition – Final Fantasy 15 – since its inception in November 2016, and die-hard fans of the series eagerly awaiting the FF7 Remake. The director of the coming Remake recently leaked more details of both.

Final Fantasy 15 Updates Announced

A brand new Final Fantasy 15 DLC was available to play at the recent PAX East 2017. Named ‘Episode Gladiolus’, the journey will take up to three hours to complete, and will be played as the character Gladiolus.

Gladiolus will be very different to Noctis. He will have huge offensive attacks and powerful charge-up moves, as well as precise blocking and guarding to help to build up the rage meter for damage multipliers.

The Gladiolus DLC will also feature new bosses, including a fight with a spruced-up one-armed version of the classic Final Fantasy boss Gilgamesh. Another section will see Gladiolus rip out pillars from the ground and crush enemies with them!

As well as the new DLC, a new patch is set to be released for Chapter 13. The chapter has been highly criticized for being an extremely linear and repetitive section of the game in which Noctis is taken down endless corridors; making for much duller gameplay that the usual open-world feel. The patch will change this section in response to the criticism.

In the new patch, there will be a separate route for Gladiolus and Ignis after they split from Noctis, and you will play as Gladio for part of the chapter, and as Gladio and Ignis together for some of the way. Noctis’ journey will be filled in with additional cutscenes.

Final Fantasy 15 producer Haruyoshi Sawatari also says, “aside from that, we’re overhauling the ring magic, so the three spells that you could use with the Ring of the Lucii – those are completely powerful now, like super powerful now.”

Both the Gladiolus DLC and the Chapter update are set for release on March 28th.

Final Fantasy Remake News

Final Fantasy VII Cloud

The news of the new Final Fantasy 15 DLC and Chapter 13 updates came alongside more talk and footage from the new FF7 Remake. We have long known that the combat will be action-based, but new screenshots show Cloud behind cover, hinting at some sort of cover or stealth system.

FF7 Remake director Tetsuya Nomura explained in an interview that the cover system will add a certain realism to the seamless combat, and will provide more variety of gameplay and tactics. Players will have a choice of how to approach certain situations; whether to opt for stealth, take cover and use a grenade, or rush right in heads-on.

Nomura also explains that there will be the option to switch between characters too, unlike in FF15. “For example, when there’s an enemy in a position that can’t be reached by Cloud’s sword, it’s more effective to switch to Barret. It’s becoming strategic in that way,” he said.

New screenshots show a pretty impressive looking Guard Scorpion battle, and suggest that terrain may also effect combat, and may be more interactive than in the original game.

Fans of the game are hoping for a 2017 release of the Remake, but we think that is looking unlikely. A clearer picture is emerging, but we could be waiting a while yet.

What’s All The Hype About?

Final Fantasy VII Cloud

For those who are new to the Final Fantasy series, you might be wondering what all of the hype is about. To those who love the game, Final Fantasy 7 was the best ever made. The original was a 1997 PS1 game that scored an epic rating across the board, and was considered practically flawless among RPG players.

The game tells the story of mercenary Cloud Strife as he struggles to understand his future, his troubled past, and his relationship with various other characters and the world around him. During his quest he will meet a tribal hound, bomb a reactor, ride a giant yellow bird, and attempt to prevent the end of the world and the impeding magical comet of destruction brought about by the greatest bad-guy of all time – Sephiroth!

Honestly, this game lives up to its hype… at least, the original does. Fans hope that the Remake will offer all of the same depth of story and plot, the same joyful and painful character interactions, the same essential components that made earlier Final Fantasy games great, but with a new state-of-the-art makeover that brings it into the next generation.

This really could be big. Let’s hope they pull it off!
