Okay, so you’ve had a long week of work, cleaning, studying, looking after the kids, and the countless other responsibilities we inherit as ‘adults’ and come Friday night all you want to do is relax in front of the TV with a movie. But which type of movie? Do you feel like a horror? Maybe you fancy a cheesy 80s action? Nope, you feel like watching a casino movie. As a gambling fan, you may have spent the week placing bets on sites betting-sites.uk.com and now just want to relax but still feeling like something gambling related. There are heaps of casino movies for you to choose from, and to help make your decision a little easier, here’s a look at 4 of the greatest modern casino movies ever made.
Ocean’s Eleven still, to this day, features one of the greatest casts in the history of movies. Directed by Steven Soderberg, Ocean’s Eleven stars George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Matt Damon, Andy Garcia, and many more. The movie is about petty, yet lovable criminal Danny Ocean, who wants to pull off one big heist and rob three of the most famous casinos in Vegas, at the same time. He assembles a crew of lovable rogues, yet not surprisingly, things don’t go as planned. The movie is heavy on the gambling and excitement, with plenty of twists and turns along the way.
Rounders is another movie featuring Matt Damon, this time in the starring role. He stars as a talented poker player by the name of Mike McDermott. After coming up short against a Russian gangster (never a good idea to play poker against a gangster) he intends on turning his life around and focussing on his studies. As bad luck would have it, he finds his childhood buddy recently released from prison and owing the wrong people a lot of money. To help his buddy out, Mike is forced back into the world of poker. If poker is your game, you’ll love rounders.
It’s easy to claim that a movie is a classic, yet when it comes to Rain Man, it really is one of the greatest modern casino movies ever made. Rain Man stars Tom Cruise and Dustin Hoffman. It tells the tale of a greedy gambler and how he manipulates and uses his autistic older brother to count cards in Las Vegas at the Blackjack tables. The movie features an award-winning performance by Hoffman, in what many people believe to still be his greatest performance to date.
The Gambler was released way back in 1974, yet to this day it still holds up as one of the greatest modern casino movies ever made. The Gambler tells the story of gambling addiction as it sees a mild-mannered teacher and family man leading a double life as a gambling addict with a habit spiralling out of control. In a bid to turn his life around, clear his debts, and beat his addiction, he ironically steals from his own family and heads to Vegas to win his fortune and pay off his debts. This movie pulls no punches when dealing with gambling addiction and is every bit as powerful now as it was back then.
