Triple Frontier Sees Ben Affleck, Oscar Isaac, and Charlie Hunnam Make Lots of Stuff Go Boom
In the past decade, Netflix went from a company known for sending customer’s mail-order DVDs to a global media empire. These days the streaming giant uses “a little something for everybody approach.” They churn out more original content than anybody can stay on top of. Great movies and TV series get lost in their never-ending content stream while poorly reviewed titles like Bird Box become pop culture phenomenons. In 2019, it’s hard to believe that a company as dominant as Netflix is still finding its footing in the entertainment industry. But there’s one area where they keep stumbling.
Netflix produces prestige films, award-winning TV, and can turn out crowd-pleasing rom-coms like nobody’s business. But one area where they’re lacking is over-the-top popcorn movies. We’re talking crowd-pleasing star-driven action flicks. Bright, The Cloverfield Paradox, and even War Machine (starring Brad Pitt) should have filled that role. None of these duds impressed critics or caught on with fans. Triple Frontier, which drops next month on streaming and select theatres, will show us if Netflix learned from their mistakes.
Triple Frontier features a murderer’s row of talent. Ben Affleck, Oscar Isaac, Charlie Hunnam, Garrett Hedlund and Pedro Pascal are men capable of headlining their own Shane Black-style action flick. And packing them into one film is like assembling The Avengers of middle-age Hollywood leading men. The trailer features handsome men in exotic locales making lots of things go boom. Check it out.
Triple Frontier reteams director J.C. Chandor with Oscar Isaac, his lead in the excellent crime thriller A Most Violent Year. It hurts my soul when a filmmaker as promising as Chandor takes five-years off between projects. He’s a smart director who shows a knack for milking every last drop of suspense from a well-written script. This man knows how to create tension in a scene. I can’t wait to see how he handles an action film on this scale. Especially with such talented actors in his tool kit.
It’s not like Netflix hasn’t hit their share of home runs. But they whiffed on their original blockbuster movies. Whether Triple Frontier is a hit or a miss, I’m looking forward to the conversation surrounding the picture when it drops next month.
Here is the synopsis for Triple Frontier:
A group of former Special Forces operatives (Ben Affleck, Oscar Isaac, Charlie Hunnam, Garrett Hedlund and Pedro Pascal) reunite to plan a heist in a sparsely populated multi-border zone of South America. For the first time in their prestigious careers these unsung heroes undertake this dangerous mission for self instead of country. But when events take an unexpected turn and threaten to spiral out of control, their skills, their loyalties and their morals are pushed to a breaking point in an epic battle for survival.
Triple Frontier drops in select theatres on March 6th and then makes its Netflix debut on March 13th.
