Tigers Are Not Afraid at The Lightbox w/Guillermo del Toro

One of the Year’s Can’t-miss Films

Tigers Are Not Afraid will receive a Toronto-exclusive theatrical run at TIFF Bell Lightbox beginning Friday, August 23. I caught this film twice when it screened at Toronto After Dark last October, and all I can say is that it deserves every word of praise. I already planned on catching this movie a third time when it arrived this month, but now, the folks at TIFF Bell Lightbox added some extra incentive. Pop culture’s most distinguished horror-mensch Guillermo del Toro will be on hand for Tigers’ opening night screening. GDT will host a Q&A with Tigers’ writer/director Issa López after the 7:45pm screening on August 23.

You know you have a gem of a picture on your hands when Academy Award-winning director, Guillermo del Toro shouts you out during his Hollywood Walk of Fame speech. And good luck finding a better mouthpiece to champion López’ dark-fantasy film. Watching Tigers elicits the same eerie vibe as a couple of GDT’s classics, The Devil’s Backbone and Pan’s Labyrinth. Tigers’ may light up the same pleasure centres in your brain as GDT’s finest work, but rest assured, Lopez delivers the story’s haunting themes in a voice that’s all her own.

If you love all things dark, twisted, and macabre, this movie is for you. If you leap out of bed with a smile on your face when something goes bump in the night, this movie is for you. Hell, if you’re simply a fan of great cinema and innovative storytellers, then you have no excuse to miss this film.

Tigers Are Not Afraid synopsis:

draws on the real-life consequences of the drug wars in Mexico for her dark fairy tale about orphaned children left behind in the aftermath of violence. The Shudder Exclusive film follows 10-year-old Estrella, who wants nothing more than to be reunited with her missing mother. In true horror fashion, her wish is granted with a cruel twist when her mother returns to her from the dead to haunt her every move. Hoping to escape the past, Estrella runs away and joins a gang of street kids who have experienced similar losses. But she soon realizes that the dead and those we lose never truly leave us — and that wishes rarely come true the way you want them to.

Tigers Are Not Afraid opens August 23, only at TIFF Bell Lightbox.
