HBO Orders Game of Thrones Spinoff House of the Dragon to Series

What Is Dead May Never Die

Yesterday, HBO announced that they would not move forward with their upcoming Game of Thrones prequel. The series, which takes place thousands of years before the events in Game of Thrones, had already shot a pilot. The show was helmed by Jane Goldman (X-Men: First Class) and starred Naomi Watts.

Given Game of Thrones‘ massive success, the prequel series looked like a sure bet. But all is not lost for Game of Thrones diehards.

HBO Executive Casey Bloys unveiled a brand-new spinoff at Warner Media’s HBO Max announcement. Titled House Of The Dragon, the series is based on George R. R. Martin’s book, Fire and Blood, which extensively details the history of House Targaryen.

Ryan Condal (Colony) wrote House of the Dragon’s pilot episode and will serve as co-showrunner along with Emmy-winning director Miguel Sapochnik. Sapochnik, who directed some of Game of Thrones‘ best episodes (The Winds of Winter, Battle of the Bastards, The Long Night) will direct the pilot. George R. R. Martin and Vince Gerardis will executive produce.
