Jonah Hex Trailer Shoots Online

The first trailer for the big screen adaptation of Jonah Hex has appeared online. Based on the DC Comics character of the same name, the film is a supernatural Western starring Josh Brolin as the titular anti-hero out for revenge. The film has something for everyone: it co-stars acting powerhouses John Malkovich and Michael Fassbender, but also features Megan Fox… in a corset.

Jonah Hex is a really cool character, one who I feel has never received the attention he deserves. He’s a frontier bounty hunter like any number of Clint Eastwood characters, only surlier and with a scar that would make Two-Face blush. I don’t know if the new film has totally captured what makes the character cool, but it seems to be on the right track in places. One of the first scenes in the trailer (the one with the coffins) is an homage to Sergio Leone’s A Fistful of Dollars, but the horse mounted gatling guns seem to scream this ain’t your Daddy’s western.

Many recent Hollywood westerns have concerned themselves less on what makes the west as a setting truly scary, and more on fancy steampunk gadgetry. I hope Jonah Hex doesn’t go this route. The west was frightening because it was unknown, lawless and full of dangerous people; not because Kenneth Branagh had a giant steam-powered spider-tank.

Jonah Hex is set to blast his way into theatres on June 18th.
