For Harry Potter fans around the world, the announcement of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child was something of a mixed blessing. On the one hand, we’re finally getting another official chapter in the Harry Potter saga. Unfortunately, most of us will never get to see it (or at least not in a timely fashion). The eighth canonical tale is a two-part stage play set to debut in London’s West End on July 30, at which point there will be a Harry Potter rift between those who can afford to get to London and those who can’t.
Of course, Harry Potter is an international franchise, which means that the former group is going to be much larger than the latter, so that situation was always going to be untenable. Thankfully, J.K. Rowling has a solution. The author has announced that there will be print and digital versions of the script book of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, which will be published simultaneously with the debut of the play later this summer. Fans may not be able to see the play, but they’ll still be able to read the script to find out what happens.
The news is both welcome and unsurprising. Fans are going to want to know the fate of the Boy Who Lived, but there are only so many seats available in the theatre. Spoilers are going to spread across the Internet as soon as the play debuts, so publishing the official playbook guarantees that fans will at least get the proper version of events. Like every other Harry Potter adventure, the official version of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child will be available to everyone.
Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is set 19 years after the events of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, kicking off moments after the epilogue of the final novel. The script book is written by J.K. Rowling, Jack Thorne, and John Tiffany. The Special Rehearsal Edition will be based on the version of the script at the time of the play’s preview performances, while the Definitive Collector’s Edition of the script will also be made available at a later date.
