First Images from Duncan Jones’ Mute

Netflix has released the first batch of images from their new original science fiction thriller Mute.

Directed by Duncan Jones, the filmmaker behind such sci-fi classics as Moon and Source Code, the cyberpunk film is one of our most anticipated movies of 2017 (hear us talk about it on our 2017 Movie Preview episode of The Shelf).

Here’s the official Mute synopsis via Netflix:

Set in the near-future, Leo (Alexander Skarsgård) is a bartender living in the pulsing city of Berlin. Because of a childhood accident, Leo lost the ability to speak and the only good thing in his life is his beautiful girlfriend Naadirah (Seyneb Saleh). When she vanishes without a trace, Leo’s search for her takes him deep into the city’s seedy underbelly. A pair of wisecracking American surgeons (Paul Rudd and Justin Theroux) are the only recurring clue and Leo is forced to take on this teeming underworld in order to find his love.

Jones has been quietly working on the cyberpunk project for months, and now we’ve finally got our first look at it. Released were several tantalizing shots featuring Mute stars Alexander Skarsgård, Paul Rudd, and Justin Theroux:

It’s hard to glean much about the film from the images or the synopsis, but it’s clear that Jones’ first collaboration with the vaunted streaming service is absolutely gorgeous. We can’t wait to see it in action. Between Mute and Blade Runner 2049, 2017 looks like it’s going to be a great year for cyberpunk movies. We’ll be sure to post the trailer as soon as it goes live!

Mute will launch in all territories where Netflix is available some time in 2017.
