The Three Greatest Heist Movies of All Time

Bank robberies and heists have featured in many films over the years. The plots can vary but the ultimate goal remains to same – to score big! But which movies scored biggest in terms of entertainment? Here are three of our favourite heists films of all time.

1. The Italian Job

Italian Job
There are two versions of the Italian job: the 1969 original and a loose remake released in 2003. While the second film is a great movie in its own right, the original is a ’60s cinema classic.

The movie stars Michael Caine, whose character Charlie Crocker has just been released from prison and is handed the plans to a job in Italy. The heist involves intercepting $4m worth of gold being delivered to the Fiat car company in Turin from China.

Crocker assembles a team of experts and sets about sabotaging the Turin traffic light system to bring the city to a standstill and prevent the police from tailing their getaway. To evade the authorities, the group make their escape in three Mini Coopers which enable them to take an unorthodox route through the urban environment.

The movie features one of the iconic car chases of cinema history and cleverly teases the audiences with its cliff-hanging final scene.

2. Ocean’s Eleven

Like the Italian Job, there are two versions of this film. But in this case, we are looking at the 2001 remake, not the 1960s original. The movie was a massive hit and has spawned three sequels so far, including 2018’s Ocean’s Eight.

The movie follows the exploits of Danny Ocean (played by George Clooney), who has just been released from prison. He immediately sets about recruiting a team to rob three of the biggest casinos in Las Vegas. The establishments are owned by the entrepreneur Terry Benedict who also happens to be dating Danny’s ex-wife Tess. He pulls together a team that includes his friend Rusty, a thief, a pickpocket, a card shark, a surveillance expert, an acrobat, a ballistics man, two conmen and another casino boss.

The film features a complex plot and a thrilling ending that contains a twist or two and leaves the door open for a sequel. The all-star cast includes Brad Pitt, Elliot Gould, Matt Damon, Julia Roberts and Andy Garcia. Ocean’s Eleven is one of the great casino heist films but nowadays, thanks to online casinos UK, players can gamble in the comfort of their own homes without fear of being caught up in an elaborate heist!

3. The Good Thief

Just a year after Ocean’s Eleven, the Good Thief was released to much less fanfare. The film stars Nick Nolte as Bob, an ageing thief and gambler who is planning to rob a casino in Monte Carlo. Bob quits drugs in order to prepare for the crime but despite his best efforts, his plans do not account for someone tipping off the police who begin watching his every move. One of the officers is an old friend of Bob who believes that he will have to arrest him once the crime is committed. However, Bob manages to stay one step ahead of the cops by organising two different heists. But which one is real?

Honourable mentions should also go to Dog Day Afternoon (1975) featuring Al Pacino and later adapted for Broadway, and Croupier (1998) starring Clive Owen.
