Vox Lux

Natalie Portman Goes Pop in the Vox Lux Trailer

In this scathing portrait of the 21st century, Academy Award winner Natalie Portman isn’t dancing with tears in her eyes as pop idol Celeste. And in true rock star fashion, the Black Swan thespian shows up fashionably late to the act divided party conducted by American art house actor turned writer/director Brady Corbet (The Childhood of a Leader) in his satirical sophomore effort.

The misleading trailer presents Portman’s pitch perfect supporting performance, complete with a Staten Island accent, as being the headliner in this politically charged expose into media manipulation and exploitation through national trauma. It also boasts a comprehensive soundtrack from Sia. Vox Lux managed to cause quite the sensation of its own on the fall festival circuit competing against other music centric flicks fronted by fearless female musicians including Her SmellTeen Spirit and Wild Rose; the latter picked up by US distributor Neon for a spring 2019 release.

Portman reunites with her Closer co-star Jude Law (Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald) for a fourth time playing the superstar’s enabling manager. And Raffey Cassidy (The Killing of a Sacred Deer) pulls double duty in dual parts of young Celeste and her daughter Albertine. Rounding out the supporting cast are Stacy Martin (Le RedoutableThe Childhood of a Leader), Jennifer Ehle (The Miseducation of Cameron Post), Christopher Abbot (First Man) all of whom are ominously accompanied by Willem Dafoe’s delightfully devilish narration.

Official Synopsis:

VOX LUX begins in 1999 when teenage sisters Celeste (Raffey Cassidy) and Eleanor (Stacy Martin) survive a seismic, violent tragedy. The sisters compose and perform a song about their experience, making something lovely and cathartic out of catastrophe — while also catapulting Celeste to stardom. By 2017, the now 31-year-old Celeste (Natalie Portman) is mother to a teenage daughter of her own and struggling to navigate a career fraught with scandals when another act of terrifying violence demands her attention.
