Wu-Tang: An American Saga Trailer

The Wu-Tang Clan ‘Bring the Ruckus’ to Hulu

2019 is shaping up to be the year of the Wu. Earlier this year, Sacha Jenkins’ excellent documentary Wu-Tang Clan: Of Mics and Men made its world premiere at Sundance, to rave reviews. The four-part doc chronicled the mythical origin story of one of hip-hop’s most influential acts. If Jenkins’ doc left you with a bit of Wu on the brain, Hulu has you covered. Later this summer, Hulu will bring The Wu-Tang Clan back to the screen in a TV series titled Wu-Tang: An American Saga. And it looks dope.

Created by Alex Tse and Wu-Tang’s Rza – if Wu-Tang were The Avengers, Rza would be Tony Stark – the series tells the true story of how the 9-man supergroup came together. What stands out – aside from the trailer opening to the Wu-Tang’s classic banger C.R.E.A.M. – is the spot-on casting. The young men playing the Wu-Tang crew may not all look like their hip-hop counterparts, but they perfectly capture their essence. Check it out.

The Wu-Tang Clan emerged from New York’s Staten Island during the early ’90s and had an immediate impact on the rap music world. The nine-member group consisted of Rza, Gza, Raekwon, U-God, Inspectah Deck, Masta Killa, Method Man, Ghostface Killah and the one and only, Ol’ Dirty Bastard. The group’s gritty style, kung fu movie mythology, and fresh sound changed hip-hop music before each Wu-Tang member branched off to pursue solo careers. Despite the crew’s success as solo artists, they would periodically reunite like hip-hop’s Voltron to drop a proper Wu-Tang album.

If you’re a fan of ‘90s hip-hop, Wu-Tang: An American Saga looks like the perfect summer treat. It shines a light on a hip-hop institution while telling an inspiring rags to riches story full of colourful characters.

Wu-Tang: An American Saga synopsis:

Wu-Tang: An American Saga is inspired by “The Wu-Tang Manual” and “Tao of Wu,” and based on the true story of the Wu-Tang Clan. Set in early ’90s New York at the height of the crack cocaine epidemic, the show tracks the Clan’s formation, a vision of Bobby Diggs aka The RZA, who strives to unite a dozen young, black men that are torn between music and crime but eventually rise to become the unlikeliest of American success stories.

Wu-Tang: An American Saga arrives on Hulu this August.
