Avengers: Endgame is just over a month away, and the suspense is killing me. Avengers: Infinity War’s shocking ending left us with too many unanswered questions. How is the team dealing with the loss of their friends? What will it take to bring a traumatized Hulk out of hiding? And what’s up with Hawkeye’s new hairdo? Plus, I really want to watch Captain Marvel punch Thanos in his smug purple face. April 26 can’t come soon enough.
The latest trailer is appropriately grim. It’s mostly black and white, features sombre voices-overs, and flashes back to the beginnings of the MCU. We’re about to be 22 movies deep in Marvel movies, and Endgame’s grand conclusion will have repercussions that change the MCU as we know it. Take a look at the trailer:
First off, we know that The Avengers will somehow resurrect half the universe’s population. But just because all those characters deaths aren’t permanent doesn’t mean it was a cheap move by Marvel or that these movies don’t have any real stakes.
Stakes in movies are about more than who lives or dies. To shrug off the Infinity War’s ending because you know Black Panther and Spider-Man won’t stay dead is reductive. Stakes are about the cost our heroes pay to move forward. Even if Steve Rogers and Tony Stark survive Endgame, what toll will Infinity Wars’ losses take on them? How will it scar them? Remember, Tony’s entire character is built on being afraid and compensating for that fear. And imagine if the only way to save the universe is for Captain America to kill Thanos. The Avengers roster would be restored, sure, how would sacrificing his values change who Captain America is moving forward? Those are real stakes.
Avengers: Endgame synopsis:
The grave course of events set in motion by Thanos that wiped out half the universe and fractured the Avengers ranks compels the remaining Avengers to take one final stand in Marvel Studios’ grand conclusion to twenty-two films, “Avengers: Endgame.”
