Let’s be honest: January is a dicey time to head out to the movies. Sure, many late-season award contenders receive wide releases in January, but it’s also Hollywood’s go-to month for stashing their steamiest turds. That doesn’t mean that a hot new property can’t drop during cinema’s winter wasteland; it happens every now and then. The Rhythm Section may prove the exception to that rule.
Directed by Reed Morano, The Rhythm Section is a gritty revenge thriller that stars Blake Lively as a woman out to avenge her family’s death. The story is based on Mark Burnell’s novel of the same name. There are several titles in Burnell’s series, so should this film do well, the track has already been laid for several sequels.
The Rhythm Section trailer:
Morano is an immensely talented director and cinematographer, and you may be familiar with her award-winning work on The Handmaid’s Tale. The Rhythm Section looks like a cross between La Femme Nikita and The Bourne Supremacy, and I can’t wait to see how Morano utilizes the film’s kick-ass female protagonist, Stephanie Patrick. Based on the trailer, the plot puts the character through the wringer – emotionally and physically. But if the 2016 surfer vs. shark thriller The Shallows taught us anything, it’s that Blake Lively characters can hold their own in a tough situation.
The Rhythm Section synopsis:
Blake Lively stars as Stephanie Patrick, an ordinary woman on a path of self-destruction after her family is tragically killed in a plane crash. When Stephanie discovers that the crash was not an accident, she enters a dark, complex world to seek revenge on those responsible and find her own redemption. Based on the novel by Mark Burnell, from director Reed Morano (The Handmaid’s Tale) and the producers of the James Bond film series, The Rhythm Section also stars Jude Law and Sterling K. Brown.
The Rhythm Section arrives in theatres on January 31, 2020.
