Once Upon a Time in Hollywood Cannes Review

Cineplex Reveals Limited 70mm Engagement for Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood

A 70mm listing for Tarantino's latest has appeared on Cineplex's website.

This week Canadian theatre chain Cineplex quietly listed a page for a limited 70mm engagement for Quentin Tarantino’s highly anticipated ninth film, Once Upon A Time In… Hollywood. While no specific cinemas have been announced, it can be speculated that the version of the film will be screened in the historic Auditorium #8 at Cineplex Varsity in Toronto, and possibly in other major markets such as Vancouver and Montreal.

Unlike Tarantino’s last film, The Hateful Eight, Once Upon A Time In… Hollywood will not have a roadshow limited release before the wide release of the film. Instead, the film will be released in all formats on July 26th (with previews likely the night of the 25th). As well, where The Hateful Eight was shot and presented on 70mm film, Once Upon A Time In… Hollywood was filmed with 35mm film and post-converted to 70mm. In late 2017, Paul Thomas Anderson’s Phantom Thread saw a similar release.

The Canadian news was preceded by an announcement by Hollywood’s very own ArcLight cinema, home to the famous Cinerama Dome, one of the many famous Hollywood landmarks to be seen in Tarantino’s latest work, would also play host to special screenings. The theatre chain announced that at the very theatre that appears in the film, they will be screening Tarantino’s entire filmography attached to early 70mm previews of his latest film. Throughout the July 19th weekend, Once Upon A… Tarantino will screen various films of his every day, with previews of Hollywood on the evenings of the 20th and 21st. Fans will be treated to a Tarantino experience including themed dècor, an exclusive drink menu, commemorative keepsakes and special giveaways. Tickets went on sale on July 8th.

This writer for one will make sure to see Hollywood *at least* once in all its 70mm glory at what I assume will be Toronto’s Varsity theatre. I can only imagine that specific theatre will be filled to the brim with his fans all opening weekend long, and we’re looking forward to what very well might be the cinephile event of the summer.
