Artists and their human subjects have been forming deep, complex emotional bonds since the very first cave painting. More often than not those relationships are emotionally fraught, downward spirals that lead to a mutually-assured destruction. Often, but not always.
Norwegian director Benjamin Ree sets out to show us the other side of the equation in The Painter and the Thief, a documentary exploring art as a conduit for healing and rehabilitation. His film follows a Czech artist (Barbora Kysilkova) desperate for answers after the theft of two of her paintings. She seeks out and befriends the career criminal (Karl-Bertil Nordland) who stole them, asking him to sit for a portrait. Through their sessions, the two develop an unlikely friendship—one that provides audiences with a masterclass in compassion, forgiveness, and the power of art.
