Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw Is All Kinds of Ridiculous
Look, that whole five-second trailer before a trailer thing irks a lot of people. But if there’s a movie that deserves that excessive indulgence it’s Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw, perhaps the most excessive and indulgent blockbuster ever made.
Without further adieu, check it out below.
The movie is directed by David Leitch, the action flick savant who blessed the world with John Wick, Atomic Blonde, and Deadpool 2. Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw also stars a couple of guys named Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham. You may have heard of them.
Let’s talk about this wild trailer. Fast & Furious flicks go out of their way to raise the stakes with each movie and what we see here takes things to another level. Idris Elba is a freaking supervillain with superpowers, and his name is…Brixton? At this rate the series’ last movie will have Dom and the crew fight Thanos.
Judging by the trailer, Hobbs and Shaw will be cinema’s next great bromance. Their love/hate relationship gives off a real Sam and Diane vibe. We already know what type of performances we’re getting from these two action movie superstars. And we have no doubts about Leitch delivering over-the-top setpieces and mind-blowing fist fights. What’s most intriguing is the film’s X-factor: Vanessa Kirby.
Kirby is electric in her few scenes in Mission: Impossible – Fallout and comes off like a superstar in the making. I’m willing to bet that Hobbs & Shaw will be Kirby’s coming out party and she will kick all kinds of ass. Who wouldn’t want to see Kirby star in Leitch’s spiritual successor to Atomic Blonde. Or better yet, as a hitwoman in a John Wick spinoff?
Hobbs and Shaw is the Fast & Furious series’ most irreverent film. Based on this joke-heavy trailer, it doesn’t take itself seriously. And that’s a weird thing to say about a series where cars parachute out of airplanes. If you’ve seen the movie Spy, you know that Statham has comedy chops – he delivers some of the funniest lines in a picture starring Melissa McCarthy. This Fast & Furious installment may be too close to the Marvel movie formula for some, but I’m intrigued by the possibilities. I want to live in a world where Hobbs and Shaw battle ninjas and cyborgs while rescuing the president.
Here’s the synopsis:
Ever since hulking lawman Hobbs (Johnson), a loyal agent of America’s Diplomatic Security Service, and lawless outcast Shaw (Statham), a former British military elite operative, first faced off in 2015’s Furious 7, the duo have swapped smack talk and body blows as they’ve tried to take each other down.
But when cyber-genetically enhanced anarchist Brixton (Idris Elba) gains control of an insidious bio-threat that could alter humanity forever — and bests a brilliant and fearless rogue MI6 agent (The Crown’s Vanessa Kirby), who just happens to be Shaw’s sister — these two sworn enemies will have to partner up to bring down the only guy who might be badder than themselves.
Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw arrives in Hulk-smashes its way into theatres on 2 August 2019. KABOOM!
