Final Fantasy VII’s Cloud Officially Joins Super Smash Bros.

Nintendo didn’t share much in the way of new games during yesterday’s Nintendo Direct presentation, but the publisher still managed to rile the Internet with a pair of fantastic character announcements. The celebration started when we learned that the female Link finally has a name (it’s Linkle), and then continued when Nintendo brought your crossover fiction to life with the news that Cloud Strife (of Final Fantasy VII fame) will soon be a playable character in Super Smash Bros for the Wii U and 3DS.

That’s right. Cloud Strife is going to throw down with Mario, Pikachu, and the Wii Fit Trainer in a cartoon fighting game in which beloved mascots beat the ever-loving hell out of each other in the most implicitly violent way imaginable.

Unlike other SSB crossover inclusions – like, say, Street Fighter’s Ryu – Cloud (or at least FFVII) has never appeared on a Nintendo console, which makes the news even more unexpected. It’s certainly an impressive coup for Nintendo. Based on the trailer, Cloud will be bringing some classic FFVII iconography with him when he makes his appearance, including the Buster Sword and frogs. The Cloud expansion doesn’t yet have a price or a release date (expect that news at a SSB Nintendo Direct sometime in December), but I’m pretty sure this one is going to sell like gangbusters no matter how much it costs or when Nintendo releases it.

Cloud is coming to Smash Bros., proving that sometimes dreams really can come true.
