We’re well into January, it’s dark by 5PM each night, and there’s a nasty polar vortex set to bear down on my city. So, it’s a perfect time to kick back, relax, and lose myself in some light-hearted entertainment. Thankfully, Netflix’s upcoming family adventure movie, Finding ‘Ohana, looks like a perfect escape.
The film sees two Brooklyn-raised city kids head off to spend their summer in rural O‘ahu, one of the most beautiful places on earth. Their laid-back summer getaway turns into a whimsical adventure when they find a journal leading to a long-lost treasure. This upbeat family flick gives off a lot of the same vibes as The Goonies, but minus the age-inappropriate jokes and dark tone – which was somehow mandatory for ‘80s family movies.
Finding ‘Ohana trailer:
Finding ‘Ohana’s director Jude Weng has an impressive list of TV show credits under her belt, including standout comedies like Fresh Off the Boat, Blackish, and The Good Place, and I’m excited to see how she puts her spin on this well-tread premise.
But to be 100% honest, I could watch this film with the sound off and appreciate it for the gorgeous Hawaiian locations.
Finding ‘Ohana synopsis:
Geocache champion Pilialoha “Pili” Kawena, age 12, is abruptly lifted from her busy New York life and dropped into rural O‘ahu to help care for her grandfather. Initially skeptical about her new surroundings, Pili finds a cryptic pirate’s journal in her Papa’s studio hinting at a 200-year-old shipwrecked treasure hidden away in the island’s caves and mountains.
With her older brother and new friends in tow she uses her clue solving skills to lead them on an adventure of a lifetime through the natural wonders of Hawaiʻi. As she learns to respect and love her native culture she also discovers not all secrets should be shared and that the real treasure in life is ‘ohana – her family.
Finding ‘Ohana releases globally on Netflix on January 29, 2021.
