Shouldn’t the hashtag be #ID42? Or would that be giving away all the answers?
But I digress. The original Independence Day is a perfect summer blockbuster that holds up twenty years later. It’s also a movie that does not in any way need a sequel. But this is the 21st century, so they’ve gone ahead and made one anyway. It’s called Independence Day: Resurgence, and it finally has a trailer.
I still think the sequel is unnecessary, but if they’re going to make one, they could do a lot worse than what we see here. There’s not much in the way of plot – the aliens are back – but humanity has used the leftover alien technology to bolster Earth’s defenses since the last movie, which hopefully means that Resurgence won’t be a complete retread of the first one. The trailer otherwise leans heavily on returning stars Bill Pullman and Jeff Goldblum (they’re not too surprised to see the aliens return), but it does introduce a few new faces in the forms of Jessie Usher, Sela Ward, and Liam Hemsworth.
Oh, and I guess the special effects look cool, too. This is Independence Day, so maybe that’s important.
Roland Emmerich is back in the director’s seat for Independence Day: Resurgence, which hits theatres on June 24.
