Featuring a great leading performance from Scott Speedman, Edwin Boyd: Citizen Gangster stands to be one of the best English language Canadian films in quite some time, and it marks director Nathan Morlando’s debut as a filmmaker to watch for in the future.
Much like similar attempts to reduce the complete works of Shakespeare into a single scant theatrical running time, the unauthorized J.K. Rowling reduction Potted Potter (now on stage until March 25th at the Panasonic Theatre in Toronto after successful runs in the UK) has the feeling of a madcap romp boiled down to a science. This cramming of all seven Harry Potter books into a 70 minute production definitely skews slightly towards a younger crowd, but the fan appeal is undeniable and the uninitiated will have a hard time erasing the ear to ear grin from their faces.
I knew going into “The Rebel Flesh” and “The Almost People” that I wasn’t going to like these episodes at all. After watching the trailer for this two-parter, the episodes immediately felt like the dismal Silurian two-parter in Series Five – “Cold Blood” and “The Hungry Earth”. Both two-installment stories deal with representations of humanity and a war between humans and their human-like counterparts (now enemies).
5 Ronin is a new mini-series, being released in weekly succession, which reinvents five of Marvel’s most popular characters in 17th century Japan. This is an out-of-continuity tale, in the same vein as DC’s Elseworlds line, or Marvel’s 1602.
From 7 p.m. on Friday, November 26 to some ungodly hour in the morning on Sunday, November 28th, Torontonians were invited to TIFF Bell Lightbox to screen the entirety of Tim Burton’s filmography (excluding the two shorts Frankenweenie and Vincent). This was in celebration of the Burton exhibit coming to town, which was first curated by the Museum of Modern Art in New York City. For some, myself included, the prospect of sitting through sixteen feature films by Burton was intriguing. Others might call it “Hell on Earth”.
