The Muppets Review

While it’s as funny as one would hope a Muppet film would be, the rebooting of this finely-felted gang of friends does have a few fairly big problems. Structurally the film is a bit wonky and the script feels like the result of many different people having a lot of different feelings about the tone of the film. To call a film like The Muppets out on such seemingly trivial issues might sound like the groaning of Statler and Waldorf, but despite any such complaints The Muppets are undoubtedly back at the top of their game comedically.

Meeting Kermit the Frog

From under the table a small green flipper came up as Kermit propped himself onto the chair in front of his microphone. “Hi everybody!” OH MY GOD KERMIT’S HERE.

Real Steel Canadian Premiere Interviews

A couple of weeks ago Walt Disney Studios, Touchstone Pictures, and Dreamworks had the Canadian premiere of their latest film Real Steel at the Scotiabank Theatre in Toronto. The event was attended by Canadian actors Kevin Durand (from Thunder Bay) and Dakota Goyo (from Newmarket) and the film’s Canadian director Shawn Levy (from Montreal). It was also attended by a guy best known for playing a really pissed off Canadian (despite being Australian): Hugh Jackman.

The Muppets Trailer

Although Disney seems to have a financial lock on the characters and their escapades, the fact that original muppeteers such as Frank Oz, and Jim Henson’s son Brian, are still at the helm means that the new film should be keeping in the original spirit of the brilliant series and early films. The script is written by Jason Segel, a solid actor and singer despite some questionable film choices, and also stars Amy Adams, who I maintain is an amazing talent.

TCAF 2011 Interview:
Michael DeForge

Michael DeForge is a busy dude. At the Toronto Comic Arts Festival this weekend, DeForge will debut two comic books, an art book, a porn-anthology that he co-edited, and he’s featured as an artist in a third anthology. DeForge has also emerged as one of Canada’s most celebrated young comic book artists. He kindly agreed to chat with us this week about his new comics, TCAF, immature Hotmail addresses, cable television and Toronto’s best ethnic food.

Sigil #1 Review

I enjoyed Sigil #1, but having never read the original series – published by CrossGen from 2000 to 2003 – I found the comic’s plot a bit thin and somewhat confusing. Still, Leonard Kirk’s attention-grabbing artistic style more than made up this, and has me eagerly awaiting issue #2.

Interview: Nobuo Uematsu, Arnie Roth & Distant Worlds

One November night, fans gathered at the ex-Hummingbird, now Sony Centre, simply to share in the presence of Nobuo Uematsu. Titled Distant Worlds: The Music of Final Fantasy, a full orchestra presented material by the legendary Uematsu, conducted by Grammy winner Arnie Roth.

Epic Mickey Review

Warren Spector’s crack at the Mickey mythos is as interesting as it is weird in his anticipated and ambitious take on the mouse, Epic Mickey. It’s a strange direction for both the cherished cartoon and the respected designer, but it’s clear that the two forces have found a comfortable middle ground for creation. Be that as it may, is Epic Mickey as successful as its starry eyes wish for?

TRON: Legacy Review

I didn’t really have any lofty hopes for TRON: Legacy. My generation missed the bandwagon for sci-fi action adventure movies that dominated theatres in the late 70s and early 80s. I was unburdened by childhood nostalgia, the only thing that had skewed my expectations about the film was the monstrous marketing campaign that Disney employed. This sequel – that nobody ever really asked for – is worth seeing, but only if you plan to watch it in 3D in a giant theatre with a killer sound system.

Tim Burton Takes Toronto – Part 3

Part Three of Sasha’s Tim Burton Takes Toronto follows the last leg of her Burton Blitz — the “animation detour” that is James and the Giant Peach and The Nightmare before Christmas.

Interview
TRON: Evolution
Art Director David Patch

The 1982 original TRON film evokes some very specific imagery. Recognizer tanks zooming by in defiance of the laws of aerodynamics, lightcycles racing through the city leaving behind light trails, and above all else neon reds and blues crisscrossing against a sleek digital world. These still form the basis of the re-imagined world spearheaded by the film TRON: Legacy, but as we found out, the tie-in video game TRON: Evolution goes a bit further.

TRON: Evolution Preview

Hey, you’ve heard about the new TRON movie Legacy, right? Of course you have! What about the video game, TRON: Evolution from Disney Interactive and Vancouver-based Propaganda Games? This week, I got to try out the newest build of the PlayStation 3 version amidst a handful of other guests at Disney’s Toronto headquarters.

TRON: Legacy Final Theatrical Trailer

Disney has unveiled the final theatrical trailer for the upcoming TRON: Legacy. Like the previous trailers for the film this one is a visual treat, but what makes this one different is that it finally reveals the plot of the film. TRON: Legacy stars Garrett Hedlund as Sam Flynn — son of Kevin Flynn (Jeff Bridges) from the 1982 TRON — who must travel to the digital world to find his father who has been missing for 25 years.
