Dethklok #3 Review

Dethklok #3 reads just like an episode of the wildly dark and humorous TV show Metalocalypse, from which it is spawned. The comic takes its name from the heavy metal band that the animated show revolves around. This isn't classic, ground-breaking, soul-searching writing, but not every comic needs to be an epic examination of the worlds of our imagination. Dethklok is just pure awesomeness.

“Justice League” writer Dwayne McDuffie passes away

As Dork Shelf publishes my All-Star Superman review, I’m saddened to say that the film’s writer, Dwayne McDuffie, has passed away. McDuffie wrote a huge amount of the DC Animated Universe’s content, including an unprecedented 69 episodes of Justice League and Justice League Unlimited. McDuffie also was responsible for the creation of Milestone Media, an […]

All-Star Superman Review

All-Star Superman is DC's newest animated feature and drops today on Blu-ray and DVD; it follows the storyline set out by the comic book of the same name. Released between November 2005 to October 2008, All-Star Superman gave us the quintessential Superman story - there were elements from every part of his mythos, and it was all tied together by one overarching plot point: Superman is dying, and needs to come to terms with his mortality.

If you find yourself in or around Paris, France between now and March 13th, I am extremely jealous of you. There is a very special art exhibition taking place at the Fondation Cartier. The spectacular exhibit, titled Moebius: Transe-Forme, is an expansive collection of the work of vaunted comics illustrator, cartoonist and artist Jean Giraud, also known as Moebius.

Geek Nerd Dork Episode 8

While Gavin was away on tour, Jess and Jeff had an opportunity to talk with Heather Labonte from Teletoon. In this episode we explore Star Wars fandom, "May the Force be with Katie", and the pitch returns with a surprising results. We also geek out over our favourite retro shows and some upcoming news about Star Wars: The Clone Wars.

Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes Review

We had a chance to see the first two episodes of the new Marvel animated series Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes. The show has some big shoes to fill, but Marvel has learned from their missteps and enlisted some serious talents to help mold this show into something that can be held up with the other fantastic comic book-based animation. Marvel Studios has totally nailed it.

TIFF 2010
The Illusionist Review

The Illusionist is director Sylvain Chomet's follow-up to the hugely successful The Triplets of Belleville, and while he is able to top his previous efforts' aesthetic beauty and craftsmanship, the story is perhaps too subtle and minimal to really draw viewers in.

Batman: Under the Red Hood Review

Batman: Under the Red Hood is the latest DC Comics animated film from Warner Premiere and WB Animation. The film is based on two well known Batman comic book stories:  the groundbreaking 1980’s arc A Death in the Family and the controversial 2005 arc Under the Hood. The former was significant because it featured the […]
