TIFF 2014: Foxcatcher Review

Foxcatcher Gala Certain to get noticed for its trio of electrifying leading performances, this unnerving and stylish true life tragedy still feels a bit off thanks to director Bennett Miller (Moneyball, Capote) overcompensating where he doesn’t need to. Olympic gold medal wrestler Mark Schultz (Channing Tatum) has just come back from the 1984 Olympics and […]

22 Jump Street Review

It’s still hilarious, possibly even more so than its predecessor through sheer volume of jokes alone, but 22 Jump Street manages to be rushed, over thought, and even kind of smug via a brand of meta humor that makes its tone almost inscrutable.

Blu-Ray Round Up: 11/4/13

This week brings looks at some leftover spooks, 'splosions, and some romance as we transition from Halloween in to the deeper recesses of fall. We look at Roland Emmerich's latest blockbuster White House Down, John Carpenter's underrated In the Mouth of Madness, James's Wan's surprise megahit The Conjuring, Richard Linklater's trilogy capping Before Midnight, and Neil Jordan's unjustly slept-on Byzantium.

White House Down Review

White House Down is both vastly better than this year's other President-in-peril flick and about as goofy and endearingly silly as one would expect from director Roland Emmerich, delivering his best all around work since Independence Day. You know, that other movie that destroyed the White House.

G.I. Joe: Retaliation Review

Full of whiz-bang special effects, plentiful explosions, and pithy one-liners, G.I. Joe: Retaliation is slightly more fun than its predecessor, but it also has way too much going on in too short of a time frame to actually be a truly great movie.

Side Effects Review

If the riveting old school styled thriller Side Effects truly manages to be the last film from acclaimed director Steven Soderbergh, he picked a hell of a film to go out on. It might not be the most ostentatious film in the director’s canon, but there haven’t been many thrillers this well constructed and efficient since the world lost Alfred Hitchcock.

Magic Mike Review

A cheesy triumph for both star Channing Tatum and director Steven Soderbergh, Magic Mike is a crowd pleasing delight despite a simple story that might seem beneath the esteemed director at first glance.

This Week in DVD: 6/26/12

This week in new DVD releases, a pair of sonically intriguing films with the Best Picture winning The Artist and the winning Swedish import Sound of Noise, and a pair of buddy action films with the smash hit 21 Jump Street and WWE Studios' Bending the Rules

This Week in DVD: 5/1/12

Following an extremely slow DVD release week last week, this week's columnists and Zack Kotzer take on a marginally less slow week with looks at Steven Soderbergh's Haywire, Ti West's The Innkeepers, and the unnecessary sequel/reimagining The Wicker Tree.
