Miss Julie Review

A taboo tryst between an aristocrat’s daughter and her father’s valet serves to send these two characters down the rabbit hole in a race to see who can sink lowest in Liv Ullmann’s Miss Julie.

Home Entertainment Review: Alexander – The Ultimate Cut

Alexander: The Ultimate Cut (Oliver Stone, 2004) – The art of filmmaking is a complex beast at the best of times.  A piece of cinema can be seen as a living breathing entity with a myriad of opportunities and possible outcomes inside what was shot and how it’s ultimately assembled.  The best of directors struggle […]

Films in Brief: 2/16/14

Since all three of this week's major releases all press screened at the same night and time during the week, here now are our reviews of the smart and funny remake of About Last Night and the astoundingly and laughably awful Winter's Tale. Also, an explanation as to why we don't have new reviews for Endless Love or Gloria, we double back on last week's never press screened Vampire Academy, we a look at Pussy Riot: A Punk Rock Prayer, which was the only new film at the Bloor this week, a special sneak at The Bloor tonight, family day offerings at The Bloor and the TIFF Bell Lightbox, and a look ahead to a Lightbox retrospective of some of Jean-Luc Godard's favourite Hollywood films starting on Thursday.

Saving Mr. Banks Review

It never takes a look at the making of Mary Poppins in any ways that could be seen as eye-opening or controversial, but Disney's Saving Mr. Banks is still a decent enough crowd pleaser with some good performances.

Seven Psychopaths Review

While In Bruges was tightly wound and focused, Martin McDonagh’s sophomore effort, Seven Psychopaths is more of a spiralling series of darkly comic episodes that only gets thoughtful in the climax and even then it's never really meant to be taken seriously. It’s his crack at creating a violent cult comedy and thankfully he’s got the skills (and the cast) to pull off that trick.

Interview: Colin Farrell & Martin McDonagh

We talked to Seven Psychopaths writer and director Martin McDonagh and its star Colin Farrell about their second collaboration following In Bruges, metafiction, the dark side of Los Angeles, and working with Christopher Walken and Tom Waits.
