Brave Review

The Scottish fairy tale Brave is a sweeping, touching, and funny epic that will delight young and old with the perfect, classic blend of Disney and Pixar magic.

Interview: The Makers of Brave

We talk to director Mark Andrews and producer Katherine Sarafian about their work together on Disney/Pixar's Brave, all of the research they did, and why the hardest and most important things in animated films are appealing characters and a great story.

The Muppets Trailer

Although Disney seems to have a financial lock on the characters and their escapades, the fact that original muppeteers such as Frank Oz, and Jim Henson's son Brian, are still at the helm means that the new film should be keeping in the original spirit of the brilliant series and early films. The script is written by Jason Segel, a solid actor and singer despite some questionable film choices, and also stars Amy Adams, who I maintain is an amazing talent.

Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides Review

I cannot give a film a pass simply because it is fun to watch. There are plenty of really bad films that are fun to watch, but that doesn't make them good films. Which is why to some degree it pains me to give the latest entry in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise a modestly negative review. It almost gets everything I like about the series right, but once you leave the theatre it will dawn on you that what you just saw wasn't all that great.

Sigil #1 Review

I enjoyed Sigil #1, but having never read the original series - published by CrossGen from 2000 to 2003 - I found the comic’s plot a bit thin and somewhat confusing. Still, Leonard Kirk’s attention-grabbing artistic style more than made up this, and has me eagerly awaiting issue #2.

Epic Mickey Review

Warren Spector’s crack at the Mickey mythos is as interesting as it is weird in his anticipated and ambitious take on the mouse, Epic Mickey. It’s a strange direction for both the cherished cartoon and the respected designer, but it’s clear that the two forces have found a comfortable middle ground for creation. Be that as it may, is Epic Mickey as successful as its starry eyes wish for?

TRON: Legacy Review

I didn't really have any lofty hopes for TRON: Legacy. My generation missed the bandwagon for sci-fi action adventure movies that dominated theatres in the late 70s and early 80s. I was unburdened by childhood nostalgia, the only thing that had skewed my expectations about the film was the monstrous marketing campaign that Disney employed. This sequel - that nobody ever really asked for - is worth seeing, but only if you plan to watch it in 3D in a giant theatre with a killer sound system.

Interview
TRON: Evolution
Art Director David Patch

The 1982 original TRON film evokes some very specific imagery. Recognizer tanks zooming by in defiance of the laws of aerodynamics, lightcycles racing through the city leaving behind light trails, and above all else neon reds and blues crisscrossing against a sleek digital world. These still form the basis of the re-imagined world spearheaded by the film TRON: Legacy, but as we found out, the tie-in video game TRON: Evolution goes a bit further.

This week, I got to try out the newest build of the PlayStation 3 version amidst a handful of other guests at Disney’s Toronto headquarters.

TRON: Legacy Final Theatrical Trailer

Disney has unveiled the final theatrical trailer for the upcoming TRON: Legacy. Like the previous trailers for the film this one is a visual treat, but what makes this one different is that it finally reveals the plot of the film. TRON: Legacy stars Garrett Hedlund as Sam Flynn — son of Kevin Flynn (Jeff Bridges) from the 1982 TRON — who must travel to the digital world to find his father who has been missing for 25 years.
