Game of Thrones: The Exhibition comes to the Lightbox

When TIFF announced earlier this year that A Song of Ice and Fire author George R. R. Martin would be coming to the Bell Lightbox in Toronto for a speaking engagement, fans of his novels and the HBO series it spawned were elated. The "In Conversation..." event sounded great, but we knew that a simple visit would not be the only thing that the film fest group had in store for Game of Thrones fans. And boy, did they not disappoint. Today, TIFF along with HBO Canada and Random House announced Game of Thrones: The Exhibition.

Boardwalk Empire Episode 2.5 Review

This week's instalment of Boardwalk Empire brought us a heaping portion of the old ultra-violence that we so cherish. It's Veteran's Day in Atlantic City, a city “built to help people forget” says Nucky in his speech to the throngs gathered to commemorate the occassion, “but today is for remembering.” Is it ever. Nothing in this episode seems to be forgotten or forgiven – every past slight is remembered and every debt paid for.

Boardwalk Empire Episode 2.4 Review

What a crazy episode. The tide has clearly turned in Nucky's favour in Atlantic City: his lawyer has an ingenious plan, Owen Slater is good at blowing things up, Chalky is out of jail, and the conspirators are vulnerable as a result of the ███████████████████. By the episode's completion, Nucky has exacted some costly vengeance against Jimmy, while Gillian violently slaps around a ████████...

Boardwalk Empire Episode 2.3 Review

With the exception of Nucky's confrontation with the Commodore and Jimmy in the restaurant, the third episode of Boardwalk Empire's second season is the least eventful of the episodes we've been treated to so far. Titled “The Dangerous Maid” for Katie, Margaret's maid, who at this point “knows too much,” the episode is preoccupied with Nelson's functional imprisonment of Lucy and fully fleshes out her resultant desolation, but otherwise, it's a table-setting episode.

Boardwalk Empire Episode 2.2 Review

The fourteenth episode of Boardwalk Empire is a busy one, centered around the growing conspiracy against Nucky and his imminent rally; a rally that is sure to be buttressed by his live-in girlfriend Margaret Schroeder. Mistaken identity abounds as Nucky is released from jail, Jimmy heads to New York to "lay some ground work" for the planned takeover in Atlantic City bootlegging, and Chalky find himself in a revealing bottle episode.

True Blood Episode 4.12 Recap

Finale?! WHAT?! Why did no one tell me this season was only 12 episodes long? Oh, I'm supposed to know that because I'm the reviewer? Oh, I see how that works now. On Sunday night, True Blood ended its fourth season with a bang… or a wet fart, depending on who you ask. It seems Alan Ball chose to dangle plot promises for next season in front of our faces instead of making the end of this one any good.

True Blood Episode 4.10 Recap

True Blood follows up last week's doofy ghost story with a surprising tearjerker of an episode entitled 'Burning Down the House'. In the tenth episode Sookie and Eric's worst fear comes true, Tommy finally gets his and Bill is determined to take out the witch once and for all, no matter the cost.

True Blood Episode 4.9 Recap

If this week’s True Blood had you thinking, ‘What the fuck?!‘ you aren’t alone. Ball seems to have dropped the ball this week with ‘Let’s Get Out of Here’. At least it wrapped up that ridiculous Baby Mikey plot. That’s over, right?

True Blood Episode 4.8 Recap

No one seems to be quite themselves in this week’s episode of True Blood, 'Spellbound’. Picking up where we left off last week, Jessica is under the witches’ spell and is about to walk out into the sun to meet her true death. It didn’t even occur to me last week that Ball might have the balls to kill off a character and even though I like Jessica, I secretly wanted to see her go up in flames because it's pretty cool.

True Blood Episode 4.7 Recap

I was interested to see how Alan Ball would follow up last week’s all over the map episode of True Blood. What started out as an exciting, plot-packed hour ended as a cringe worthy, softcore porn Twilight tribute (albeit with a good soundtrack). Thankfully he managed to maintain the excitement without the cheese this week in ‘Cold Grey Light of Dawn’.

True Blood Episode 4.6 Recap

The sixth episode of True Blood's fourth season is entitled "I Wish I Was the Moon" for the Neko Case song that plays at the end of the episode and into the credits. The episode itself begins and ends with Erik Northman and Sookie Stackhouse locked in a long awaited, barely clothed embrace, and as for episode structure - that's about it. "I Wish I Was the Moon" has some stellar moments, some moments worthy of the misspent potential of the series, but when taken as a whole, the episode struck me as listless and disorganized - as much of this season has been.

True Blood Episode 4.5 Recap

Despite numerous betrayals, spilled secrets and a long-awaited hook up, True Blood didn’t really get my blood pumping this week with its fifth episode ‘Me & the Devil’. Not surprising for mid-season of course, but still not saying much if this episode was a yawner despite there being a double murder. At least this week Alan Ball dialed back the inbreeding and has yet to find a cure for Eric’s shirt allergy. As Marnie would say, thank Goddess!

True Blood Episode 4.4 Recap

Just the other day I was contemplating the current television landscape when it occurred to me that — save for Game of Thrones — there just isn't enough incest on cable. Looks like Alan Ball agrees because family lovin' seems to be the theme of the latest episode of True Blood called 'I'm Alive and On Fire'.

True Blood Episode 4.3 Recap

The thing I really love about True Blood is that it's not only entertaining, it's also educational. In this week's episode 'If You Love Me,Then Why Am I Dyin' we learned that entrapment doesn't count as a defense in Vampire law, Mexico makes the best viagra and virtually any relationship problem can be solved with hypnosis. All valuable lessons that can be applied to our everyday lives.
