Interview: ParaNorman’s Chris Butler & Sam Fell
Part Two

In the age of the omnipresent CG animated film and vapid big budget spectacle, it’s incredibly refreshing to see a lovingly handcrafted stop-motion animated movie like ParaNorman come along. We had a chance to speak with directors Chris Butler and Sam Fell earlier this year, and talked about the talented young cast of the film, the directors' own experiences with bullying, ParaNorman's relationship to the horror genre, the importance of zombies, and much more.

In the age of the omnipresent CG animated film and vapid big budget spectacle, it's incredibly refreshing to see a lovingly handcrafted stop-motion animated movie like ParaNorman come along. We had a chance to speak with directors Chris Butler and Sam Fell earlier this year, and talked about the "John Carpenter meets John Hughes" origins of the film, how technology has helped make stop-frame animation more practical, and much more.

Bad Medicine #1 – 2 Review

Bad Medicine is a gritty new series by Oni Press that debuted at Free Comic Book Day, featuring a questionable cast of characters thrown together to solve a crime drama with some serious sci-fi elements. How do you find a perp you can't see? This is the paradox facing Detective Joely Huffman in the case of a body found with an invisible head with all signs pointing to an invisible murderer.

Alien Retrospective: Part Three – Alien 3

What follows is the third part of my in depth journey through the Alien universe, beginning with Aliens, then back to Alien, and ending off with Alien 3 and Alien: Resurrection. I do this in the hopes that maybe I can explain even just a little bit of the mysterious dark, fury that has left me thinking about LV-426 for the nearly two decades.

Interview: Beyond The Black Rainbow Director Panos Cosmatos

Beyond The Black Rainbow is a deeply bizarre science fiction/horror film set in an alternate 1983 in a style of how that future was pictured in the 70s. First time director Panos Cosmatos recreates the aesthetic of late 1970s sci-fi with such mind-boggling attention to detail that it would be easy for an unsuspecting viewer to assume they stumbled onto a lost film from that era. We got a chance to chat with Cosmatos about the conception and production of his remarkable debut, as well as growing up in a house with the guy who made Rambo.

Alien Retrospective: Part Two – Alien

What follows is the second part of my in depth journey through the Alien universe, beginning with Aliens, then back to Alien, and ending off with Alien 3 and Alien: Resurrection. I do this in the hopes that maybe I can explain even just a little bit of the mysterious dark, fury that has left me thinking about LV-426 for the nearly two decades.

Home Review

Home, the latest offering from independent game developer Benjamin Rivers, is amazing, although not for the reasons you’d expect. It's a narrative horror adventure that succeeds because it experiments with story structure in a way that forces you to reconsider the possibilities for interactive storytelling.

The Nic Cage Project: The Wicker Man

To celebrate TIFF’s ongoing Bangkok Dangerous: The Cinema Of Nicolas Cage series, Alan Jones has resurrected his retrospective of the actor’s work entitled The Nic Cage Project. In this edition, Jones takes a look at Neil LaBute's disturbing and inexplicable remake of The Wicker Man – playing tonight at the Lightbox.

The Innkeepers Review

As his first film since The House of the Devil, The Innkeepers is horror director Ti West’s opportunity to show a winning streak, or at least an uncanny corridor. It also happens to be a chance for star Sara Paxton, often cast as that pretty blonde in really forgettable roles, to earn a new start, not unlike West himself.

The Devil Inside Review

The first film to be released in any year often isn’t very good. They are the films that are quietly released amid award season fare and during the period where the kiddies are going back to school. Even by those low standards, one would be hard pressed to think of a worse start to a year than The Devil Inside. If there is a worse film than this dreadfully inept “found footage” horror coming out in 2012, I hope and pray I don’t have to sit through it. Six days into 2012 and it feels like the top of the worst of the year list is already in the bag. That record has to count for something, right?

The Scream Chronicles: Part Two

Most filmmaking is a seat of the pants endeavour fraught with pitfalls and last second changes. Nothing goes according to plan, but more often that not on major Hollywood productions things tend to go more swimmingly. That is, of course, provided that they aren’t making a sequel to one of the previous year’s biggest success stories. Scream 2 stands as a testament to director Wes Craven and writer Kevin Williamson. It's a film that managed to be almost equally as good as the original and actually far more interesting on an academic level.

The Scream Chronicles: Part One

After watching all four Scream films again on Blu-ray, I find it a bit strange that I haven’t devoted more time to talking about a series of films that single-handedly revived the slasher genre with a blend of genuine terror and self-reflexive humour. So here now begins a four week long look back at the history of the now seminal series that has been slaying audiences since 1996.

TADFF 2011: The Innkeepers Review

As his first film since The House of the Devil, The Innkeepers is horror director Ti West’s opportunity to show a winning streak, or at least an uncanny corridor. It also happens to be a chance for star Sara Paxton, often cast as that pretty blonde in really forgettable roles, to earn a new start, not unlike West himself.
