First, get ready to point out the impossibility of getting 50,000 points in Double Dragon in only a few minutes during the 1989 Fred Savage vehicle (and Super Mario Bros. 3 commercial) The Wizard, and then stick around to see an early foray in to …CG animation in the cult classic The Last Starfighter – a film that finally vindicates the educational value of video games.

Fragile Dreams Review

Last time I reviewed Metro 2033, a Ukrainian made glimpse into the nuclear fallout and submerged societies. This time I’m looking at Fragile Dreams: Farewell Ruins of the Moon, a Japanese glimpse at a young boy traversing a barren world and decrepit undergrounds. While both are atmospheric adventures across a haunted wasteland, only one can […]

Mega Man Bosses: Behind the Metal

Mega Man Bosses: Behind the Metal – Where Are They Now? Mega Man bosses never really die, they just lie around for a while until Dr. Wily fixes them back up again. While he has made plenty of mechanical menaces, his early creations still hold the heaviest spot in his heart – for it was […]

Web Game Wednesday: Super Mario Bros. Crossover

Have you ever wanted to play the original Super Mario Bros. as Link, Samus or Simon Belmont? No? Well, then you’re crazy. However, if you’re anything like me, then you have always dreamed of slicing, whipping or blasting your way through the Mushroom Kingdom as one of Nintendo’s many other 8-bit heroes. New Super Mario Bros. Wii Review

Don’t let ME to tell you kids what to like, with your Robert Pattinsons, your iTwitp3pods, and your rock ‘n’ roll noise music, but years before New Super Mario Bros. Wii there was a game called Super Mario Bros for the Nintendo.  Now that you’re up to date on decades of fiddling with a Super […]

10 Things I’d Do With Samus’ Power Suit

Like, if I bought it or something.  Or found it in my garage. 10. Swing to work: No more long walks for me.   As long as I live in the shadow of condominiums, I could use my grapple beam like Spider-Man uses webslingers – that is, to hurtle through the city 50 feet up like […]

10 Reasons Link is Terrible Roommate

Link, We Need Some New Rules if We’re Going to Keep Living Together… 10. Using the hook shot to do everything is really annoying.  Just get up and get it.  Our apartment isn’t that big.  It takes you, like, ten minutes to get the fridge door open with that thing and then another five to […]

8-Bit Trip: Video Game Homage Animated with Lego

The Swedish electronica duo Rymdreglage put together an amazing music video combining two of my childhood obsessions: video games and Lego.  8-Bit Trip features nods to Tetris, Mario, Pac-Man and more. Like any stop-animation, the video would have been insanely time consuming to produce.  It allegedly took upwards of 1500 hours to […]

Castle Vacancy: Mario World 1-1

So What Other Castle is the Princess Actually in Anyway? 10. Lego Castle: And who wouldn’t? I mean, face it, Mario, your castle is diminutive and two-dimensional. If she hadn’t bolted, princess would be Princess Hunchback. Lego is 3-D, opposable hand-cups, and you get to choose any assortment of hats you want. Movin’ up! 9. […]

Wii Emulator Makes Nintendo Titles Hi-Def

With high definition gaming from Nintendo looking increasingly unlikely in this current console generation, some intrepid designers have created a work around. The Wii and GameCube emulator Dolphin allows users to play legally (or illegally) copied Wii and GameCube games on their PC’s. Although you need some pretty hefty hardware to emulate the games well, Dolphin […]
