Thyrone Tommy’s intense examination of a marine navigation student battling anxiety,and an incident from his past, during his exams features a level of detail that could only come from a director intimately familiar with the subject matter. Indeed, Tommy spent a year as spent as a Marine Navigation Cadet in Owen Sound, Ontario, and the sequences featuring Nate (a terrific Thomas Olajide) being tested in the navigation simulator are incredibly tense and well done. It’s precise, confident work from a director to watch, and features great use of two different versions of Stan Rogers’ legendary Barrett’s Privateers.
