Ang Lee is one of the most intriguing filmmakers working today. Lee left his mark on all types of genres over the years; a period piece (Sense and Sensibility), a comic book movie (Hulk), and an Oscar-calibre wuxia film (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon), to name just a few. Lee approaches each picture from a unique angle and infuses the material with his distinct vision. Whenever Lee signs on for a new project, I take notice. But I find his latest project, a sci-fi action flick titled Gemini Man especially intriguing.
I don’t need too many reasons to check out a new Ang Lee film. But Lee teaming up with Hollywood’s most charismatic action star, Will Smith, sounds like a can’t miss prospect. Though Smith is no longer a guaranteed box office draw – but nowadays who is? – few directors are capable of putting his talents to great use like Lee.
As if featuring Will Smith in your movie isn’t already a big deal, the story features Smith in a dual role, also playing a younger version of himself. While Gemini Man has a pulpy sci-fi premise, you can guarantee Lee will use the story as a thoughtful commentary on what it means to be human.
