Anyone familiar with the street art movement knows the name Banksy. Though no one knows the true identity of the illusive urban artist, his distinctive graffiti art can be seen in cities all over the world. If you’re a fan of Banksy’s work or street art in general, the new documentary Exit Through the Gift Shop may interest you.
The film is billed as “the world’s first street art disaster movie”, and was the labour of love of Franco-American artist Thierry Guetta. Guetta, whose cousin is noted street artist Invader, wanted to make a documentary about Banksy and the street art movement, but ended up having the cameras turned on him by the guerrilla artist. The documentary debuted at Sundance earlier this year to critical acclaim.
Toronto Banksy fans are in luck, because Mongrel Media is putting on a free screening of Exit Through the Gift Shop tonight, Saturday April 24 at midnight. The first 350 people to show up at AMC Yonge and Dundas will get into the film.
