Packaged Goods: Artful Animation

For many people when they think about animation, it doesn’t go too much farther than the latest releases from Disney/Pixar or the shows that they grew up with while sitting in front of the TV in their pyjamas on a Saturday morning.  In reality there’s so much more, as the latest installment of the Packaged Goods series entitled Artful Animation (playing this coming Wednesday night at 7:00pm at the TIFF Bell Lightbox here in Toronto) highlights some of the best animators have to offer in their partnership with Stash Media that looks at some ads, music videos and short films that all use the media in vastly different ways.

Featuring pieces from all around the world, some of the highlights of this installment include a high energy dance music video by Diplo, a trippy mind bending short about a guilt riddled amputee starring Elijah Wood, a stunning sci-fi short called R’Ha from an up and coming director named Kaleb Lechowski that we may be seeing more of in the near future, a short about a Viking with some very unique drinking habits and a lovely animated short fable promoting the value of books and reading.  Every piece in this program is distinctly different from the others and shows a wide variety of different styles.  Getting to see pieces like this is obviously a treat unto itself but in addition to the programming of the evening, post show attendees will be treated to discussion session with Gerald Ding, the creative director of the award-winning Psyop, a studio skilled in animation, design (in 2D and 3D), and live action productions.

If you aspire to this making a career in this industry or if you are just a fan of animation this program and guest speaker promise to make for a highly interesting night at the Lightbox as we learn a little more behind the craft of animation.
