The Monuments Men Review
While it has some enjoyable moments, a complete lack of character development and an unsure storyline make George Clooney's latest directorial effort, the all star World War II period piece The Monuments Men, a bit of a ponderous disappointment.

Just as illogical and bearing an intensely preachy, somewhat botched political message this Neil Blomkamp's previous outing District 9 suffered from, Elysium might just be slightly better since it doesn't hinge on a gimmick it can abandon as soon as possible once the filmmaker decides he just wants to start blowing things up and stop making any sense.
Behind the Candelabra Review
Steven Soderbergh's Liberace bio-pic Behind the Candelabra - debuting tomorrow on HBO with a simulcast at the TIFF Bell Lightbox for the Inside Out festival at 9pm - is a tasteful and fascinating look at a kitschy entertainment icon, with excellent leading performances from Michael Douglas and Matt Damon.
Promised Land Review
Despite a solid set up, great performances, and a surprisingly unsentimental script from actors Matt Damon and John Krasinski, the Midwest set drama Promised Land comes up short thanks to a pretty dire final third.

Contagion Review
Director Steven Soderbergh takes on a deadly viral outbreak in his latest film, Contagion, with the same episodic story structure that he employed when he took on the war on drugs in Traffic. What this means is that Contagion is a very well made and often fascinating film that feels longer than it really is and it forgets about most of its characters at fairly inopportune times. The two films could really play side by side as a double bill of Soderbergh procedurals. They have almost the exact same strengths and the exact same faults.
