The Witcher Trailer: Has Netflix Found Its Answer to Game of Thrones?

It’s been a few months since Netflix released the first teaser trailer for their highly anticipated adaptation of The Witcher – a popular series of Polish fantasy novels which also spawned a bestselling video game franchise – but today, appropriately, the streaming service released an extended look at the upcoming series starring Henry Cavill. Will it be the company’s answer to HBO’s recently concluded Game of Thrones? The show certainly looks to be trying to fill those shoes!

Watch the trailer for Netflix’s The Witcher below:

Cavill plays Geralt of Rivia, a so-called witcher – a skilled warrior imbued with superhuman abilities and trained from childhood to hunt supernatural creatures of all sorts – who is unwillingly pulled into the politics of the realm because of his extraordinary abilities and connection to the heir to an empire (Freya Allan). Also in the mix is Yennefer (Anya Chalotra), a powerful sorceress and diplomat who has a complicated relationship with Geralt.

If you’re a fan of the books or the games, then you’ll already know that Netflix’s take on The Witcher looks pretty spot on. If you’re not familiar with the series and are looking for something to dig into now that Game of Thrones is over, The Witcher might have the right mix of action, magic, and political intrigue to satisfy those cravings.

The Witcher will premiere on Netflix on December 20, 2019.
