Golden Globe nominations Marriage Story

Golden Globe Nominations: Marriage Story Leads

Marriage Story leads this morning’s Golden Globe nominations! The Noah Baumbach dramedy earned six nods including Best Motion Picture and acting noms for Adam Driver, Scarlett Johansson, and Laura Dern. Although it missed in the director category for Baumbach, the filmmaker landed a nomination for his screenplay.

On Marriage Story‘s heels are Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood and Martin Scorsese’s The Irishman with five nominations each. Joker, Rocketman and The Two Popes also gained much needed boosts in the Oscar race with each film landing four nominations including Best Motion Picture. Overall, Netflix dominated the awards and landed four Best Picture nominations: Marriage Story, The Irishman, and The Two Popes in drama and Dolemite Is My Name in the comedy race.

Misses and “Foreign Film” Stuff

Adam Sandler took a hit, as his critical hit Uncut Gems was shut out. Also smarting somewhat is Taika Waititi, whose Jojo Rabbit earned a nomination for Best Motion Picture in the comedy category, but failed to land nominations for director, supporting actor, and screenplay.

Bong Joon-ho’s Parasite earned three nominations including Best Director and Best Foreign Film. The Hollywood Foreign Press Association limits the eligibility in the drama and comedy categories to English-language films, which explains its omission from the Best Motion Picture – Drama category. This rule also explains why Awkwafina has a nomination for Best Actress, while The Farewell appears in the foreign category and not the comedy race.
