There are few things better than snuggling up on a cold winter’s day and getting stuck into a good mystery. Britain has given us our fair share of excellent detective series, from classics like Poirot and Morse to modern dramatic gems like Vera and Shetland and even the more lighthearted dramedies Agatha Raisin and Father Brown. Coming March 20, there’s a new entry to the latter genre that looks like a perfect addition to the pantheon of binge-able content from across the pond.
Ludwig stars the consistently delightful David Mitchell (Peep Show, Upstart Crow) as John Taylor, a reclusive puzzle maker who publishes books under the titular pseudonym. When his identical twin brother—a successful Chief Inspector—vanishes without a trace, John joins forces with his sister-in-law Lucy (Anna Maxwell Martin) to track him down and bring him home. Posing as his twin, John infiltrates the police and ends up embroiled in grisly investigations as he continues his hunt for his lost sibling, all while playing dad to a ready-made family. Not surprisingly, it all becomes a bit overwhelming for a man used to solitude. Still, John has one significant advantage: his immersion in the world of puzzles gives him the ability to see the world around him in a unique and invaluable way. Can this master of all things cryptic crack his biggest puzzle yet?
A stellar supporting cast, including Sophie Willan, Ralph Ineson and Derek Jacobi, supports Mitchell and Maxwell Martin throughout the six-part series. If British television is your jam, keep your eyes peeled for a host of familiar guest stars, too.
The series aired on BBC One to rave reviews this past fall and a second series is already in the works. Catch up and tune in to the first season when it premieres here on BritBox in Canada and the U.S. on March 20. Watch the new trailer below:
