Elgort Plays Two Brothers Caught in the World’s Most Awkward Living Arrangement
Writing about movies often makes me feel like I’m on a treadmill, running until my lungs burn but not moving further ahead. As a sci-fi fan it’s easy to stay caught up on films like Avengers: Infinity War and Solo: A Star Wars Story. But for every blockbuster, there are a dozen promising indies I can’t seem to make time for. I’ve had The Endless, Prospect, and High Life on my to-do list since September. Now we can add one more title to the list.
Today marks the home release of a new sci-fi movie called Jonathan. Jonathan screened at Tribeca and the LA Film Festival last year and stars Ansel Elgort (Baby Driver), Patricia Clarkson (Sharp Objects), and Suki Waterhouse (The Bad Batch). It’s directed by Bill Oliver and co-written by Gregory Davis & Peter Nickowitz. Check out the trailer:
I’m really feeling this movie’s hook. What’s scarier than sharing control of your body with another person? Think about how uncomfortable you get when handing your unlocked phone over to someone else. Now multiply that by about 100. And the thought of competing with another person who lives in your skin is as unsettling as unsettling gets.
Based on the trailer, Jonathan won’t jump to the front of my sci-fi must-see list. But it is a movie I plan to get to (deep sigh) eventually. Here’s Jonathan’s synopsis:
In this sci-fi-tinged drama, Ansel Elgort plays two brothers living very separate lives – inside the same body. Previously content to live life in shifts with one another, their delicate balance is ruined when they become emotionally involved with the same woman (Suki Waterhouse).
Jonathan is available in Canada on DVD and Blu-ray Combo on January 22nd, 2019.
