Leave it to director Zack Snyder (300, Watchmen) to find a reason to put five beautiful young actresses in leather school girl outfits and have them fight everything from mecha-samurai to dragons and fighter planes. Snyder has described his new film Sucker Punch as “Alice in Wonderland with machine guns”, which judging by the trailer below, is a fairly apt description.

Emily Browning (Ghost Ship, The Uninvited) stars as Baby Doll, a young girl institutionalized by her evil stepfather and facing a lobotomy. In order to cope with her ordeal she retreats into an alternate reality to help plan her escape. The film also stars Jon Hamm, Scott Glenn, Vanessa Hudgens, Jamie Chung, Jenna Malone, Abbie Cornish and Carla Gugino.
If there is one thing that can be said about Snyder’s films, it’s that they look nice. He also seems fairly capable when it comes to filming and conceptualizing action scenes; anyone who has seen his previous efforts can attest to that. Since Sucker Punch is Snyder’s first film project not based on other material—Dawn of the Dead was a remake, while 300 and Watchmen were based on graphic novels—it will be interesting to see what he can do without a blueprint in front of him. The film looks pretty wild from the trailer, hopefully the director can deliver something interesting.
Sucker Punch is due in theatres March 25th 2011.
