Christopher Nolan
Transcendence (Wally Pfister, 2014) – More than anything else, Transcendence is a lesson in how tone can kill a movie. The premise is goofy, the science is half-cocked, and the message is obvious. However, it is a blockbuster, so those things wouldn’t matter quite so much if it were bright, colorful, and silly. But Transcendence […]
Films in Brief: 1/31/14
Since mainstream new releases seem to have us singing the blues, here are a few neat classical and nostalgic options, with Cineplex continuing their annual Great Digital Film Festival and the TIFF Bell Lightbox showcasing the works of Paul Verhoeven and the unsung, pioneering African American filmmaker Oscar Micheaux.
Man of Steel Review
Although it might be still somewhat of an unsubtle disappointment, Man of Steel offers enough action and promise for the future, particularly from Henry Cavill in the lead and even from Zack Snyder in the director's seat. Still, someone needs to tell Christopher Nolan (and by extension actual hired writer David S. Goyer) to stop putting his very specific and far too serious spin on DC titles.
The Dark Knight Rises Review
An appropriate end to the Christopher Nolan cycle of serious Batman films, The Dark Knight Rises manages to up the stakes in terms of action, suspense, and even in terms of wit. On the other hand, it’s not hard to say that this third instalment with Christian Bale behind the cowl is the least of the franchise, but most of the problems this time our are fairly nitpicky in nature and come mostly when Nolan seemingly needs to force himself to get serious again when even the director seems like he just wants to have some actual fun for a change.
Up Close with The Tumbler
In honour of tickets for The Dark Knight Rises going on sale today, we talked to one of the handlers of the famed Tumbler (and it's little brother, The Batpod), a.k.a. Christopher Nolan's Batmobile.

It’s a spider-man! It’s an iron man! No, it’s a super man! Earlier today Warner Bros. released the first image of Superman from Zack Snyder’s upcoming Man of Steel slated for a 2013 release. The image shows Henry Cavill as the titular 'Man of Steel' showing off the squareness of his jaw in a suit that replaces the vintage spandex look with the recycled basketball one people seem to really like these days.

They join returning cast members Christian Bale, Michael Caine and Gary Oldman.
Inception Review
Christopher Nolan won himself a great deal of opening weekend cred thanks to The Dark Knight; he is likely going to need it for Inception. It’s not that Inception is a bad film—the movie is actually one of the most original major releases to come along in ages—It’s that the film feels too cerebral for […]
