This week's DVD column is all over the map as takes on Underworld: Awakening , the horror remake Mother's Day , and the romantic drama The Vow , while Phil Brown takes a look at the almost unclassifiable Tim and Eric's Billion Dollar Movie .
Now that The Avengers has whet the appetites of Summer moviegoers, let's take a look at the other big releases this month, including Men in Black III, Dark Shadows, Battleship, and The Dictator .
It’s simultaneously mind-boggling and easy to see why director Lynne Ramsay’s We Need to Talk About Kevin was snubbed and shut out of so many potential accolades this awards season. Despite having a stellar lead performance from actress Tilda Swinton as a mother at the end of her wits, Ramsay’s film might be looked down upon as just another genre film with a high gloss. That’s sad, since it’s one of the best and most outright terrifying bits of familial horror from last year.
Cedar Rapids is a nice movie. It’s a nice movie about a nice guy full of nice characters and nice jokes. And, like a young lady deciding whether or not to date a nice boy, your enjoyment of Cedar Rapids will depend on whether niceness on it’s own is enough to truly get you excited.
Short films are (almost) always amazing and inspiring.
