The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind Trailer: An Inspiring True Story

The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind Sees One of Hollywood’s Best Actors Takes His Talent Behind the Camera

Chiwetel Ejiofor is one of those rare actors who makes everything he appears in 10% better. It doesn’t matter if he’s the main character or a bit player who shows up in a scene or two. This man has the goods. Ejiofor anchored the harrowing Best Picture winner, 12 Years a Slave, stole the spotlight with his small role in The Martian, and portrayed one of my all-time favourite villains as Serenity’s The Operative. And that’s leaving out his outstanding work in Dirty Pretty Things, Inside Man, and Children of Men. Ejiofor is one of the most talented actors working today, and thanks to Netflix, we’re going to find out if his talent translates behind the camera.

Ejiofor wrote, directed, and stars in the upcoming drama, The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind. Based on a true story, The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind is about a Malawi boy who uses his wits to save his village by, you guessed it, harnessing the wind. Specifically, wind turbines. Newcomer Maxwell Simba stars as William Kamkwamba, the wind-harnessing boy. Take a look at the trailer:

And if the trailer moves you, you can see the real-life William Kamkwamba give a Ted Talk here.

This is definitely a case of a trailer giving away many of the movie’s pivotal emotional beats. But considering that this film has a spoiler in the title, you should already know what you’re getting. I’m impressed by the cinematography. The opening shot of a farmer working a dry field as the sun rises behind him does a great job setting the mood. The washed-out colour palette and dusty backdrops make you feel the village’s hardship. The swelling orchestral score is a bit much, though. And the story looks a bit by-the-numbers for my taste, but I can look past those gripes.

I may not catch The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind on the day it drops, but I’m definitely adding it to my ever-growing Netflix queue.

Here is the official synopsis:

Against all the odds, a thirteen-year-old boy in Malawi invents an unconventional way to save his family and village from famine. Based on the best selling book and true story of William Kamkwamba. Directed by and starring Chiwetel Ejiofor and introducing Maxwell Simba.
