TIFF 2014: Big Game Review

Big Game

Midnight Madness

A thoroughly over the top and infinitely exciting action romp, the sure to be noticed Finnish import from the man who brought the world Rare Exports (you know, the really wild killer Santa Claus movie) will leave genre fans wishing it never ended by the time the credits roll.

When the President of the United States (Samuel L. Jackson, doing his trademark badass, but as the fucking leader of the free world) finds Air Force One has been shot down in an attempted terrorist assassination plot in the mountains, he teams up with 13-year old Oskari (a wonderful and equally badass Onni Tommila), a young man out on a journey of 24 hour journey of self-discovery that finds who finds the plane’s escape pod, and they’re forced to fight for their lives and kick some ass wholesale.

Big Game

Does Big Game make a lot of logical sense? No, not really. Does it need to when it’s this entertaining? Definitely not. It’s a film made up almost entirely of high points and very little filler. Jalmari Helander knows how to shoot action, refrains from kinetic editing, and gives the threadbare Die Hard knock-off story just the right kind of epic feel. People will eat this up.
