It may feel like we already know all there is to know about Paul McCartney. But somehow, that’s still not the case. In Man on the Run, award-winning documentary director Morgan Neville focuses on the musician’s post-Beatles period and the creation of the second major chapter of his life: a solo career, a marriage, children, and his second incredibly successful band, Wings. Through an incredible amount of archival footage and interviews, both old and new, Neville builds an engrossing portrait of a young man relearning himself and discovering what he truly wants out of his life. And it’s not necessarily what anyone expected.
That Shelf’s Managing Editor Emma Badame sat down with Neville ahead of the documentary’s debut on Prime Video to talk about his time with McCartney, the importance of Linda, and how you pull together something that feels new about one of the most famous men in the world.
