The Hollywood Reporter Roundtable Series Spotlights the Industry’s Most Accomplished and Respected Talent
The Oscars are only a couple days away, and social media pundits are scrambling to lock in their picks. This award season has been a wild ride, and there won’t be many safe bets at the Academy Award ceremony on Sunday night. If you’re competing in an Oscar-pool, or just want to boost your cinephile cred, The Hollywood Reporter roundtable videos are just the series for you.
Every year, The Hollywood Reporter hosts a series of roundtable discussions featuring the entertainment industry’s best and brightest directors, writers, actors, producers, songwriters, and cinematographers. They release these hour-long videos in the lead up to the Oscars, which consist of moderated discussions with talent in the running for major awards. Past roundtables have featured prominent figures such as Amy Pascal, Guillermo del Toro, and Angelina Jolie. They also spotlight upcoming stars like Issa Rae, Greta Gerwig, and Jordan Peele. If you eat, breath, and sleep movies than these discussions are essential watches.
Let me nerd-out for a moment. Here is a roundtable discussion from 2018 which features last year’s Oscar-winner for Best Cinematography, Roger Deakins (Blade Runner: 2049). The video also features Janus Kaminski (The Post), Robert Elswit (Suburbicon), Rachel Morrison (Mudbound), Dan Laustsen (The Shape of Water), and Hoyte van Hoytema (Dunkirk). Take a look.
It’s a wonderful time to be part of any type of fandom. If you’re passionate about something, social media and streaming sites allow you to stay on top of your interest daily. As a cinephile, The Hollywood Reporter roundtables are part of my film school. They feature intelligent conversations covering topics that are as fascinating as they are informative. And if your lucky, these industry heavy-weights drop some sweet anecdotal gems.
My favourite part? That’s listening to these successful filmmakers and screenwriters discuss how tough it is trying to make it in the business. It’s a real eye-opener when you hear a technical master like Guillermo del Toro recounting the chaos that broke out on his The Shape of Water set. (Shout out to Michael Shannon). These discussions help humanize these talented people, and makes their lofty status feel attainable. If you have hopes of making it in the business, stories from Ryan Coogler and Greta Gerwig will pump out the inspiration to fuel your dreams.
Check out this recent The Hollywood Reporter roundtable featuring Ryan Coogler (Black Panther), Yorgos Lanthimos (The Favourite), Alfonso Cuarón (Roma), Spike Lee (BlacKkKlansman), Marielle Heller (Can You Ever Forgive Me?), and Bradley Cooper (A Star Is Born).
