The Deep Review

Only a week after topping the box office with the US made action flick 2 Guns, there's no better time to revisit the other film Icelandic director Baltasar Kormakur made last year (no, not Contraband): the gripping real life survival drama The Deep.

Drug War Review

Drug War, the latest film from prolific master filmmaker Johnnie To, is exactly the kind of movie Martin Scorsese dreams of making all the time. A crime drama that’s tense, understated, and alternating between action and high drama without feeling forced, this lean exercise dazzles just by being simple.

We’re the Millers Review

It's not a great comedy, nor an awful one, but We're the Millers does feel like a throwback to some of the more innocuous Hard-R rated comedies of the 1980s in some pretty decent ways.

Kevin Hart: Let Me Explain Review

While not as fresh as his previous big screen stand-up outing, Kevin Hart: Let Me Explain should appeal nicely to the comic's fans and those who wish this particular style of concert film would make a comeback.

Blu-Ray Round-Up: 8/5/13

This week at the video store we check out new Blu-Rays for recent releases Trance, To the Wonder, Oblivion, and Olympus Has Fallen, and two new Criterion releases for The Devil's Backbone and Lord of the Flies.

The Canyons Review

Not the trainwreck many feared it would be, but still far from a misunderstood classic, The Canyons starts off pretty great (including, yes, a good performance from Lindsay Lohan) before devolving sadly into incoherence.

The Attack Review

While not terrible and admirably not picking a side in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict the drama-mystery The Attack sadly comes off as inert when it should be brimming with emotion.

This Week at The Bloor: 8/2/13

This week at The Bloor: A downright terrifying look at online privacy issues in Terms and Conditions May Apply and a heart wrenching look at the often derided and persecuted Roma people in A People Uncounted.

2 Guns Review

While it certainly won’t go down as one of the most memorable movies of the year, 2 Guns does have an undeniable amount of charisma and charm that make it one of the more pleasant summertime surprises.

Berberian Sound Studio Review

Berberian Sound Studio is certainly one of the strangest movies that you’re see all year and also one of the most perversely fascinating. A surreal, horrific, thriller just as insane as its main character.

Ghost: In the Smoke and Din Review

Ghost: In the Smoke and Din comes out July 31 and we recommend it for its well-paced and well-plotted story, believable characters, and clean expressive artwork.

Blue Jasmine Review

Thanks to an excellent script and a knock-out leading performance from Cate Blanchett, Blue Jasmine is handily Woody Allen's best film since the early 1990s. Instead of being fun, playful, or genre based, it's emotional, real, and keenly perceptive.

The Newsroom Episode 2.3 Recap

The stories of episode three continue to be removed from the flash-forward mystery conflict seen in the season two premiere of The Newsroom. Much like last week’s episode, the show forces us to ‘...wait for it’ without even knowing what ‘it’ is. That being said, there are still some fun moments.
